Carved into the tuff of volcanic origin, it rises from one of the picturesque promontories that give this town its breathtaking landscapes. Situated on the border between Tuscany and Lazio, it is close to places such as Terme di Saturnia and Cascate del Mulino, two other jewels of the Tuscan Maremma. It is also known as the “little Jerusalem” for its central role in the life of Jewish communities since the 16th century. Let’s discover 5 places to see in Pitigliano.

The historical center

Stone steps, narrow alleys, squares, and panoramic views: the historic center of Pitigliano takes us back in time, but also allows us to visit its stores filled with local products. In Piazza della Repubblica there is the Fountain of Sette Cannelle, built by the Orsini family in 1545 and so-called because of its seven taps decorated with figures of animals. From piazza Petruccioli, instead, it is possible to reach Palazzo Orsini, originally owned by the Counts Aldobrandeschi.

The Medici Aqueduct

Its two large arches stand out in the landscape of Pitigliano and date back to 1636, when it was built by the Medici to bring water from the streams under the cliff. The Fontana delle Sette Cannelle is fed by water from the aqueduct, along with two other fountains.

The Cathedral of Pitigliano

Also known as the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, it has a late baroque facade with medieval elements such as the bell tower. Another church worth visiting is the Romanesque church of Santa Maria and San Rocco, the oldest in Pitigliano.

The Jewish Ghetto

Starting in the sixteenth century, Jewish communities settled in Pitigliano, giving rise to a Jewish Ghetto built behind the cathedral. A synagogue was founded in 1598 and still open to visitors. Other points of interest are the unleavened bread bakery and the bagno rituale.

The Vie Cave of Pitigliano

Known as “cavoni”, they have walls up to 20 meters high and were excavated by the Etruscans to connect Pitigliano with Sorano and Sovana. The Via Cava del Gradone and the Via Cava della Madonna delle Grazie are the most visited in the area because of their beauty.

Tuscany is full of magical towns and villages, but Pitigliano, one of the tuff villages, stands out for its peculiarities.

[112,115
121,122
post-102019","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-maremma","category-tourism","tag-turism","tag-maremma-en
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.8 -
